University Rehabilitation Institute, Republic of Slovenia
Founded 1954, the University Rehabilitation Institute is the leading organisation in Slovenia providing medical rehabilitation, assistive technology, prosthetics and orthotics as well as psychosocial and vocational rehabilitation. The services are centralised in the centre in Ljubljana except one branch of vocational rehabilitation placed in Maribor. The Institute employs 480 professionals who provide services to around 11,000 clients per year (3,000 inpatients / 8,000 outpatients). The centre is most famous for its medical rehabilitation caring for victims of mines.
The centre is also very active in the field of education of practitioners, and receives a lot of students (nursing, doctors, physiotherapists…) and stagiaires. The Institute has also a huge information and documentation centre that is open to all Slovenian citizens. At the same time, the Institute also is actively involved in research projects (also publications and seminars), and cooperates in this field with the University of Ljubljana. Furthermore, the University Rehabilitation Institute is and has been constantly involved in several international projects (such as Leonardo projects) as well as activities in Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia (mainly with mine victims).
