New Actions of the Strategy on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are a Work in Process for the European Commission

On 19 June, EPR attended the Disability Platform’s* second meeting of the year, hosted online by the European Commission (EC). At this meeting, the EC shared its work towards launching new actions for the second half of the Strategy on the rights of persons with disabilities.

During the meeting, topics discussed included:

  • Takeaways from the Polish Presidency of the Council and priorities of the Danish Presidency of the Council if the EU with regards to the EU’s work on implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). 
  • The Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on the review of the EU’s work to implement the UN CRPD.
  • State Aid legislation to support the employment of workers with disabilities.
  • Work-life balance Directive from the carer’s perspective and its implementation.
  • Ongoing work on Guidelines on access to healthcare for persons with disabilities.
  • Ensure partnership with regional, local authorities, representative organisations of persons with disabilities, civil society, fundamental rights bodies and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of EU funds.
  • EU Preparedness Strategy: Development of guidelines on how to act in emergencies adapted to all types of disability, to be published by 2026.
  • The Commission is currently working on new actions on the Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2021-2030) which the Commission aims to publish by the end of 2025 earliest. 
  • Regarding the Framework of Services of Excellence for persons with disabilities, the document is still being checked internally.
