From Training to Employment: Theotokos Foundation Initiative for the Work Inclusion of People with Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders

Despite possessing valuable skills and talents, many individuals with developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face persistent barriers when it comes to securing employment. These challenges often stem from misunderstandings about their communication styles, social behaviors, and unique ways of interacting with the world, which can lead to discrimination, misinterpretation of their abilities, or difficulty navigating traditional work environments. This results in alarmingly high unemployment rates among this population as they struggle to find opportunities that accommodate their needs and help them succeed.

In an aim to change this reality, the Theotokos Foundation (Greece) has established a vocational orientation programme to equip people with developmental disabilities and ASD with the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in a professional environment. Dedicated staff support the individuals by focusing on both personal and professional development, creating inclusive environments, and promoting autonomy and social participation.

The programme features 15 one-hour sessions involving 10 beneficiaries with developmental disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders at a time. The participants are trained in Theotokos’ vocational workshops and either have expressed their desire to work themselves, or are referred by their trainers because they know their potential.

Prior to enrolling in the programme, vocational workers take time to get to know the individual with the goal to:

  • Assists in choosing a career path that matches the individual’s skills, interests and needs;
  • Matches the personality characteristics of the individual with the characteristics of the job environment;
  • Aims to develop realistic goals and enhance the participants’ career path.

The final component of the programme is action-orientated, with participants receiving assistance in setting their employment goals, an action plan to achieve them, preparing a CV and having mock interview sessions.
