Fundación ONCE organises ‘Pathways of Resilience: Transforming mental health through contemporary art’

The IX Fundación ONCE Contemporary Art Biennial, held at CentroCentro in the heart of Madrid, is a cultural event that runs from 25 September 2024 to 12 January 2025. This year’s theme, “Paths of Resilience: The Transformation of Mental Health through Contemporary Art,” focuses on the transformative power of contemporary art in addressing mental health issues. The exhibition features works from 43 artists, both national and international, with over half of them having disabilities. This inclusive approach aligns with Fundación ONCE’s mission to promote accessibility and social inclusion through art.

The Biennial showcases a diverse range of artworks that explore themes of resilience, mental health, and the human condition. It includes pieces from renowned artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dalí, alongside emerging talents. The artworks are sourced from prestigious museums, galleries, and the artists’ personal collections.

In addition to the main exhibition, the Biennial features a series of parallel activities (workshops, guided tours, and panel discussions) designed to engage the public and enhance the overall experience.

In line with the mission of Fundación ONCE, both the exhibition space and contents and parallel activities are fully accessible. Accessibility measures include labels in Braille and placed at an ideal height for comfortable reading by wheelchair users or persons of short stature, and the Fundación ONCE Art Biennial app, designed to enhance communicative accessibility for persons with visual or hearing disabilities. The app works by detecting the proximity of the person to different elements, displaying relevant information about each artwork, with text descriptions that can be verbalized by the device, videos, or other information that allows for the discovery of different elements, as well as receiving information about the surroundings, enabling everyone to enjoy the visit.
