On 11 December, EPR attended the event hosted by the European Parliament High Level Group on Gender Equality and Diversity, organised in the framework of the Disability Rights Week.
This was the first occasion where Hadja Lahbib spoke publicly since she took office as EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management. As such, she expressed:
“I will always be a strong supporter of persons with disabilities in Europe, but also across the world. I will be a tireless champion for their full inclusion in society and economy, and push for them to have equal opportunities.”
Her commitment of support was welcomed by participants, especially in light of an open letter sent to Commissioner Lahbib on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, urging her to “keep the momentum” on disability rights by updating the EU Disability Rights Strategy. EPR joined the call together with more than a 100 other organisations.
During the event, Inclusion Europe also presented their recently published updated ‘Inclusion indicators 2024’ report. It reveals how 31 European countries are performing on rights and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The indicators measure areas such as independent living, housing, education, employment, healthcare, and political representation. Read the full report here.
