ONCE Foundation, UN Tourism and Asociación Española de Normalización UNE (The Spanish Standardisation Body) have released a set of recommendations to help tour operators, travel agencies and travel agents to implement ISO Standard 21902:2021 on accessible tourism. The publication offers strategic and actionable recommendations to ensure tourism experiences are inclusive and meet the diverse access needs of all travelers.
The guide outlines best practices across eleven areas, including staff training in accessibility, verifying the accessibility of services, and providing information in accessible formats. It also promotes the design of inclusive travel products from the outset, based on universal design principles. Emphasis is placed on working with accessibility experts and integrating accessible services into mainstream offerings.
Positioning accessibility as both a social responsibility and a business opportunity, the guide encourages tourism professionals to broaden their market reach and improve customer satisfaction. Ultimately, it supports a tourism model that is inclusive, competitive, and economically sustainable.
“How to apply ISO Standard 21902: Accessible tourism for all – Recommendations for tour operators, travel agencies and travel agents” is available in both Spanish and English.
