On July 4th the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held a public hearing on “The role of family members caring for people with disabilities and the old persons: the explosion of the phenomenon during the pandemic”. The EESC presented its opinion on this topic, highlighting among the main priorities the need to recognise the role of family members, to streamline bureaucracy and to identify new and better ways to support families, both from a social and economic perspective. Civil society organisations were also involved and stressed the need to address staff shortages in care services, gender inequality and lack of funds in the sector.
The outcomes of this initiative will be presented at the plenary session of the EESC at the end of October.
