The European Union’s High-Level Group has released its final report on the future of social protection and the welfare state, addressing the challenges faced by shrinking workforces, ageing societies, and changing labour markets. The report emphasises the need to strengthen and sustain social protection systems through sustainable financing It advocates for a life-course and preventative approach to social and welfare policies, with recommendations including increased investments in health, long-term care, and support for children and families. The report calls for an ambitious political agenda for the next EU legislative period, aligning with the European Pillar of Social Rights principles. The report identifies public health actors as essential in addressing the socioeconomic determinants of health and equity, aligning with long-standing recommendations.
