The German Paralympic Media Award: making disability sports more visible

The German Paralympic Media Award (GPMA) was launched in 1999 by the German Social Accident Insurance as a way to raise awareness of disabled sports and recognise the achievements of athletes with disabilities in popular sports and competitions. The prize is awarded every year to journalists who cover sports for people with disabilities. This year’s winners of the “Online/Social Media” category were Dorian Aust and Philip Wegmann, journalists who run a social media channel on Instagram and Facebook called “Alles Para”, as well as a podcast on disability sport, the first and only one covering this topic. The two journalists try to make their channel as accessible as possible, for instance by adding subtitles to the podcast episodes or barrier-free image descriptions.
