Eurofund Report: Paths towards independent living and social inclusion in Europe

As Europe embraces the transition from institutionalised forms of care to community-based services, Eurofund has released a report which looks into the state of play of institutional living across Europe over time. Concerningly, the numbers of children, adults with disabilities and older people in residential institutions has increased in the past 10 years, concerning 1.44 million people across the EU.

Moreover, the report presents information on national deinstitutionalisation strategies and practices, overall painting a rather bleak picture of the progress made thus far. It includes two person-centred case studies that illustrate the benefits of deinstitutionalisation and of greater social inclusion, and the challenges encountered in efforts towards these goals. Given these findings, the report proposes some key policy recommendations to improve the state of social inclusion and community-based support in Europe.
