As the Europe Union prepares to embrace the future with Artificial Intelligence (AI), setting the stage for a regulatory framework in the ever-evolving landscape of AI, EPR is excited to co-organise with Fundación ONCE and with the collaboration of our esteemed Spanish members – Fundación INTRAS, Fundación Rey Ardid and AURA Fundació –  this year’s Annual Conference in the vibrant city of Málaga, Spain, on 18 and 19 June.

The Conference will bring together EPR community of members, partners and policy makers to learn from each other and exchange ideas on how we can “future-proof” our services and safely harness the rapidly increasing opportunities from technological advances in AI and assistive technologies.

Over a period of 1.5 days of dynamic discussions and networking sessions, the event will enable us to focus on the opportunities and risks of embracing AI and new technologies to deliver services to people with disabilities in the present and future.

Join us for a unique blend of networking, mutual learning, and expert insights on this transformative and exciting topic!

Aims of the Conference

The right technologies can be life-changing for people living with a disability and will be essential in supporting our ageing population with disabilities. However, there are limitations and risks to such rapid technological transformations in terms of ethics, bias and transparency. This conference will provide a platform for participants to discuss these opportunities and risks by:

  • Supporting service providers to understand the new generation of technology: Who’s behind its development, what values and ethics drive it, how transparent is it and how can ensure it is an empowering tool for people with a disability and not yet another barrier due to bias.
  • Hearing from first-class experts and practitioners: Immerse participants in the latest trends, innovations, and best practices with insights from experts.
  • Sharing inspiring practices: Showcase and exchange inspiring practices that harness the power of AI, assistive technologies, and other cutting-edge tools.
  • Promoting networking: Foster connections and collaborations among our members and guests.
  • Embracing the EPR community: Celebrate the essence of being part of EPR and the continued growth and prosperity of our network.

Workshops

Workshop 1: Moving towards a technology-enabled and community-based continuity of supporting services

When does a patient become a person? If you are a service provider, you have probably reflected on this question at least once. The answer is complex and is directly linked to enabling a community-based continuity of services, also through technology. This workshop will provide insights on how tech and AI-based solutions can help service providers with tools that can follow an individual along the whole pathway of care, from being taken care of as a patient in hospital or homecare settings, to living an autonomous life in the community, as a person.

Participants will learn about real-life innovative experiences of in-hospital robotic rehabilitation and home telerehabilitation, as well as examples of digital solutions for smart and healthy ageing at home. The workshop will also be an opportunity to reflect on the challenges posed by regulatory developments at a time of fast technological progress, and on the importance of promoting digital democracy, co-leadership and good governance aligned with the UNCRPD.

Workshop 2: Improving organisational efficiency with AI for social services providers

ONCE IT Manager presents #InclunIA: InclunIA is a bias-free artificial intelligence model designed to optimize the labour intermediation process at Fundación ONCE / Inserta Empleo. The main objective of InclunIA is to improve efficiency and equity in the selection processes, facilitating the placement of people with disabilities in the labour market. By using advanced algorithms and machine learning techniques, InclunIA ensures a fair evaluation of candidates, eliminating biases and promoting inclusion.

Using AI in shift planning – a new way to organize the workflow of over 500 people: Autism Foundation Finland is a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving individuals on the Autism spectrum. AFF provides a comprehensive range of services to support their 1,300 individual clients, positioning them as one of the largest service providers in Finland. The offerings include housing services, both round-the-clock support and less intensive options, daily activities, and employment services, amongst others. The shift planning of 26 units and staff over 500 used to take a long time. Currently, the employees use an app to make their wishes for shifts known. Based on the wishes and the need for staff in every shift, AI optimizes the shifts and needed personnel. AI also takes notice of the collective bargaining rules and all the other factors around the conditions for the work.

Astangu Vocational Rehabilitation Centre presents the example of Astangu VRC, a prototype for a language lesson generator that enables teachers of language immersion course to create lesson scripts using pre-set prompts based on language teaching frameworks. Reflecting together on the main concerns/problems that arise when trying to implement new solutions, but also daring to dream to greatly improve efficiency via AI.

Workshop 3: AI & new tech: inspiring practices from across Europe

Dive into an inspiring workshop that brings together pioneering examples and practices of AI and new technologies from across Europe. This workshop will feature insightful presentations and interactive sessions led by three innovative projects on cutting-edge technologies that successfully integrate technology and AI to support the rehabilitation and social inclusion of people with disabilities. Join us to gain insight and practical hands-on experience on how smart mirrors, smart glasses and an employment match making application is using AI to make impactful outcomes for people with disabilities in their day to day lives and for their rehabilitation. This workshop promises to inspire and equip participants with the knowledge and tools to lead and innovate within their own contexts and organisations.
