Implementation of WHO/Europe’s framework for action on the health and care workforce

On January 23rd, representatives from WHO/Europe, European and national trade unions and health workforce organisations participated in an event organised at the European Parliament, in Brussels, Belgium aiming to discuss better working conditions for healthcare professionals in the European Union.

During the event the World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighted that the current healthcare crisis is multifaceted and consists of many individual crises, including labour, mental health, education, gender equality and lack of financial investments that have to be addressed effectively, for instance, by implementing the new “Framework for action on the health and care workforce in the WHO European Region 2023–2030”.

The experts urged that the Belgian presidency that is currently chairing the Council of the European Union shall particularly focus on EU health workforce strategy that must result in urgent and concrete action. The Belgian presidency, in its turn, has announced it will take steps towards an EU health workforce strategy during the first half of 2024 reflecting the needs of all parties.
