The High-Level Group on the future of social protection and the welfare state in the EU has released its final report, addressing the challenges faced by shrinking workforces, ageing societies, and changing labour markets. The report emphasises the need to strengthen and sustain social protection systems through sustainable financing. It advocates for a life-course and preventative approach to social and welfare policies, with recommendations including increased investments in health, long-term care, and support for children and families. Ultimately, public health actors are recognised as having an important role in addressing the socioeconomic determinants of health and equity, aligning with long-standing recommendations.
